Frequently asked questions

Straight answers before a project starts.

If your question is not covered here, send it over. An initial conversation is free and there is no expectation to proceed.

Can I try the Blackwell software?

You can explore short, illustrative previews of Blackwell Accounts, Site Proof and Product Compliance Cloud on this website. They use fictional records so you can get a feel for the workflows. The software is still in development. Contact Blackwell to discuss a product and its availability.

How much does a website cost?

It depends on the number of pages, content, integrations and level of design involved. After a short conversation, Blackwell provides a written quote with the work and assumptions set out clearly. Where possible, website projects are quoted as a fixed scope rather than an open ended hourly bill.

How long does a website take?

A focused small business website can often be completed in a few weeks once the content and decisions are available. Larger sites and custom features take longer. Your proposal will include a realistic timescale and the points where feedback is needed.

Do I need to provide the words and images?

Not necessarily. Blackwell can help structure and write the website copy from a conversation about your business. Existing photography can be used if it is suitable. If new professional photography would materially improve the result, that will be recommended before the project is agreed.

Can you improve my current website instead of rebuilding it?

Yes. If the underlying site is sound, focused improvements may be the better investment. Blackwell can review clarity, mobile behaviour, accessibility, performance and the enquiry journey, then recommend the highest value changes.

Will I own my domain and website access?

The project setup will state who controls the domain, hosting and service accounts. Wherever practical, important business accounts should be held in your name with Blackwell given appropriate access. This avoids unnecessary lock in and makes handover clearer.

What is custom software?

It is a tool built around a particular workflow or product need. Examples include an internal job tracker, client portal, structured assessment, reporting dashboard or an early version of a product idea. The aim is not to build something enormous. It is to solve the right problem cleanly.

Can you connect the tools we already use?

Often, yes. If the systems provide a suitable and permitted way to connect, Blackwell can explore automating routine movement of information, notifications or reports. Feasibility and any third party costs are confirmed before work begins.

What happens after launch?

You receive the agreed files, access and practical handover information. A support or maintenance arrangement can be included where ongoing updates, monitoring or small changes would be useful. It is optional unless a specific service depends on it.

Who owns custom software?

The proposal or contract will make this clear. Your business data remains yours. Blackwell normally retains reusable underlying methods and components while granting the licence needed to use the delivered product. Exclusive ownership or a full transfer can be discussed and quoted separately where required.

Where do you work?

Blackwell is based in Scotland and works remotely with businesses across the UK. Project reviews and support can be arranged online.

Still deciding?

Ask the question you actually have.

You do not need a formal brief. A short description of the business and the problem is enough to begin.
